Congratulations to Dr Joyce Yeung, an Honorary Consultant in Critical Care at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB), who has been appointed National Institute of Health and Care Research (NIHR) National Anaesthetics, Perioperative Medicine and Pain Management Specialty Lead.

The National Institute for Health and Care Research is the British government’s major funder of clinical, public health, social care and translational research.

Dr Yeung, who is also Deputy Clinical Director of Research at the Trust, said she was ‘honoured’ to take on her new role, the main aim of which is to promote and offer clinical research studies to all patients as part of their routine care.

She said: “Anaesthetists play a crucial role in ensuring patient safety and wellbeing during the perioperative period. Anaesthetists also provide pain management and care for many patients including obstetric care, acute illness as well as medical emergencies.

“There are abundant opportunities for our research to improve quality of care and patient outcomes. I look forward to working with our colleagues to foster a positive research culture within our specialty.”

Professor Matthew Brookes, Clinical Director of the NIHR Clinical Research Network West Midlands added: “It is great news for our region that Dr Yeung will now be leading nationally on this vital area of research, and we very much look forward to continuing to work with her.”

Hilary Fanning, Director of Research Development and Innovation at UHB, said: “Dr Yeung’s appointment is a testament to her commitment for improving the care delivered to patients through this important area of research.

“We look forward to both working with and supporting her in this role.”
