What do dietitians do?

Dietitians assess, diagnose and treat dietary and nutritional problems to improve a person's health or treat a disease or condition by educating and giving practical, personalised advice to patients, carers, clients and colleagues.

Dietitians are integral members of multidisciplinary teams at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB) that treat complex clinical conditions such as:

  • Malnutrition
  • Kidney failure
  • Liver disease
  • Metabolic diseases
  • Bowel disorders

As a part of a multidisciplinary team, dietitians have close links with medical, nursing, catering and pharmacy departments as well as the other therapy services.
