Facilities 2 Nursing

Facilities to Nursing (F2N) was co-created by Healthcare Careers and Development and Facilities at University Hospitals Birmingham NHS Foundation Trust (UHB).

The innovative programme enables you to undertake a programme of supported employment which progresses from an initial role within the Facilities department to a healthcare assistant role (HCA), once certain competencies have been attained.

Following this, you will be supported by the UHB School of Nursing to pursue the option of becoming a trainee nurse associate, gaining a level five apprenticeship qualification. You will be supported by a dedicated pastoral coach throughout the programme.

The pilot of F2N was launched in September 2023 at Heartlands Hospital.

Programme details

A three-week employability programme bespoke for F2N was developed, which involves guidance through the NHS Jobs website, application and supporting statement, infection control certificate (AQA), interview preparation and mock interviews, and one-to-one appointments.

Over nine months in Facilities, you will rotate to experience all areas of Heartlands Hospital. You will have a mentor and a coach, who will support your development. Once completed, you will move on to the healthcare assistant (HCA) role, which will involve the completion of the Care Certificate while being supported to gain valuable experience and development in clinical areas over the remaining nine months.
