Developing Leaders Within the NHS

This programme helps attendees to better lead their teams to identify business improvements and place continuous improvement at the centre of everything they do.

Course aims

The programme aims to provide delegates with the skills to:

  • manage their teams more effectively for improved motivation and productivity
  • examine current leadership styles and identify unhelpful behaviours and attitudes
  • performance manage people through objective setting and feedback
  • identify business improvements and the changes to ensure sustainability

Proposed audience

This programme is for those at Band 5 and higher.

Leading and Building Quality Improvement Programme

This five-day programme aims to equip participants with the knowledge of techniques and tools to identify issues and undertake improvements in their organisation. This includes learning about improvement methods such as sustainability models, thinking differently, process mapping and human factors.

Proposed audience

All staff with a problem that they would like to help solve within their organisation.

Performing Perfectly Programme

This three-day programme is designed to equip attendees with the skills, behaviours and knowledge to support them in performing at their best when delivering to an audience. This includes when delivering to peers, a team or to the organisation.

The course enables attendees to feel comfortable in situations where they need to perform, looking at how to communicate clearly, and developing understanding of personal image and impact. Along with identifying strengths and areas for development, and understanding how to achieve the best outcomes from an audience, these skills help to build confidence.

Participants learn new techniques including:

  • neural linguistic programming
  • psychotherapy
  • theatre stagecraft
  • movement
  • use of metaphors in storytelling

Proposed audience

The programme is aimed at bands 6 – 9 who want to build and develop the ability to have impact and presence.

Compassionate Leadership Programme

Compassionate leaders build safety, trust and co-operation and contribute to a culture of connection, integrity and belonging.

The two-day Compassionate Leadership Programme is grounded in the practice of self-compassion, relational practice, team practice and leadership practice. 

Course aims

To enabling participants to:

  • experience the benefits of working collaboratively to grow trust, psychological safety and co-operation
  • reflect on the importance of inclusion and compassion in growing both personal and collective well-being
  • explore the shift from linear (top down, command and control) to circular (ripple effect, never ending change) perspectives
  • commit to self-compassionate action
  • refine understandings of compassionate practice
  • experience the benefits of hosting practice and consider relevance to own leadership practice
  • write a personal vision for sustained compassionate inclusive leadership

This programme is open to staff working at all levels.

Compassion Circle Facilitation Training

This programme gives participants the tools and confidence to "hold compassionate inclusive space" for themselves, their teams and the wider system. The two-day masterclass is hosted by Andy Bradley, founder of Frameworks 4 Change.

Course aims

The aims of the programme are for attendees to:

  • know about the rationale for the compassion circle practice
  • experience a compassion circle
  • reflect on the experience
  • practice elements of the facilitation of a compassion circle
  • make plans for implementing compassion circles
  • consider a model for facilitating compassion circles in each other’s organisations
  • be able to contribute to the development of a compassion circles community of practice

Proposed audience

Compassion, Courage and Choice Masterclass

This masterclass gives participants an opportunity to reflect on healthcare as a whole system and to experience tools and techniques which build trust, psychological safety and co-operation. 

Course aims

The masterclass encourages attendees to:

  • think about the paradigm shift in perspective from illness to wellness
  • be ready to be a force for inclusion
  • understand the potential of the new powers of mindfulness, hosting and compassionate facilitation
  • experience a compassion circle
  • discover the values that are central to creating and sustaining compassionate cultures
  • develop a plan for leading with compassion

Proposed audience

This course is open to staff working at all levels.

ILM Level 5 Certificate in Effective Coaching and Mentoring

The ILM Level 5 Certificate in Effective Coaching and Mentoring aims to provide learners with the required knowledge, skills and understanding in order to effectively coach or mentor others.

The programme focuses on developing the skills to be an executive or performance coach. On completion of the qualification, participants will be expected to join the West Midlands Leadership Academy CoachNet register.

Participants will attend four one-day workshops and undertake reading, tutorials, one-to-one supervision, reflective journals and practical assignments that will provide a further 138 learning hours over the course of the programme.

Assessment will be via two work-based assignments plus a reflective diary based partly on an evidenced minimum of 18 hours coaching or mentoring practice in the workplace. 

Course aims

By the end of the programme, participants will be able to:

  • assess their own skills, knowledge and behaviours as a coach or mentor
  • perform effectively as a manager, coach and/or mentor
  • make a case for coaching or mentoring to their organisation
  • demonstrate real benefits to coaches and mentees and their organisations

Proposed audience

The programme is aimed at leaders who are interested in and committed to developing their role by empowering, inspiring and encouraging staff to perform beyond their expectations.
